Embodiment Construction

[0012] Those of ordinary skill in the art will understand that the following description is intended to be illustrative rather than limiting. The artisan will understand that many changes can be made within the true spirit of the invention and the protection scope of the appended claims. For the sake of focus and clarity, well-known functions and operations will not be repeated in this specification.

[0013] In a preferred embodiment of the outlined method illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, a type 2 spectrum agile radio 401.j scans the spectrum 507 and then maintains a database 505 of spectrum occupancy metrics using the included information element processing module 506. Based on this database 505 maintained locally by the agile device as a result of the scan, the agile device 401.j can decide to switch on a carrier in a part of the spectrum that is not used by the primary device 402.j or the other secondary device 403.j. In a preferred embodiment, the switching decision is ma...

Abstract

The system (400), apparatus (401.j), and method (100) of the present invention provide a way to expand and contract the available wireless channels opportunistically by optimally switching the OFDM carriers. The present invention employs a spectrum occupancy information element (200) and a local spectrum occupancy database (505) respectively for exchange of spectrum occupancy information with other devices and persistent storage of spectrum occupancy information, both of which enable seamless working of agile radios in such a way that their transmission capacity is greatly enhanced.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention provides systems, devices and methods for opportunistically extending and shrinking available wireless channels by optimally switching Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) carriers. Background technique [0002] An agile radio is an agile device that uses software to define its channel modulation waveform. That is, the waveform is generated as a sampled digital signal, switched from digital to analog via a wideband analog-to-digital switch (DAC), and then possibly upconverted from IF to RF. Similarly, a wideband analog-to-digital switcher (ADC) used by the receiver captures all channels of the software defined radio node. The receiver then uses software on a general-purpose processor to extract, downconvert, and demodulate the channel waveform. [0003] Thus, an agile radio can use a single radio implementation to choose any supported radio protocol or associated frequency band. Agile radio systems can scan for ...
