Embodiment Construction

[0011] The present invention is a liquid recycle reactor suitable for hydroconversion using a slurry feedstock comprising heavy oil hydrocarbons and a catalyst.

[0012] The following co-pending applications disclose the preparation of active slurry catalysts suitable for use in the present invention: US Patent Serial Nos. 10 / 938202, 10 / 938269, 10 / 938200, 10 / 938438, and 10 / 938003. These applications are incorporated by reference. The slurry composition is prepared by a series of steps including mixing a Group VIB metal oxide (eg, molybdenum) and ammonia to form an aqueous mixture, and sulfiding the mixture to form a slurry. The paste is then promoted with a Group VIII metal. The slurry is then mixed with heavy hydrocarbon oil and mixed with hydrogen to produce the active slurry catalyst. The catalyst is kept agitated in storage until mixed with the feedstock during hydroconversion.

Abstract

The instant invention relates to a reactor useful in upgrading heavy oils admixed with a catalyst composition in a slurry. The liquid recirculating reactor of this invention employs a dispersed bubble flow regime, which requires a high liquid to gas ratio. A dispersed bubble flow regime results in more even flow patterns, increasing the amount of liquid that can be upgraded in a single reactor.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a reactor for upgrading heavy oil, wherein the heavy oil is mixed with a catalyst composition in slurry form. Background of the invention [0002] Liquid recycle reactors are highly efficient for heavy oil upgrading. Heavy hydrocarbons may be mixed with the active catalyst composition in slurry form. [0003] Conventional heavy oil upgrading by hydrotreating uses relatively inefficient large extrudate catalyst pellets to support the reaction. Significant advantages of heavy oil upgrading by hydrotreating using finely divided slurry catalysts have long been recognized. Past attempts to demonstrate large-scale slurry heavy oil hydroprocessing have relied on upflow reactors using bubble column technology. However, such reactors have encountered difficulties in maintaining the desired dispersed bubbling flow pattern, which is necessary for efficient use of the reactor volume. Past bubble column reactor issues and dif...
