Medication safety enhancement for secondary infusion

A system and method determine when fluid is not flowing properly from a secondary infusion source during a secondary infusion. The system includes an upstream pressure sensor and a processor programmed to receive signals from the sensor and analyze the signals to determine if secondary fluid flow is proper. The processor samples the output signals from the upstream pressure sensor and analyzes the sampled signals to determine if a pressure rise in the infusion line has occurred when the secondary infusion is initiated. If a pressure rise, indicating that fluid from the secondary container has begun flowing into the infusion line, has not been detected, the processor is programmed to provide a signal indicating that attention should be given to the infusion set up.

Contaminated liquids filtering apparatus

A filtering apparatus comprising an elongate container body, an inlet, an inlet reservoir, an outlet, an outlet reservoir, and at least two filter elements, wherein each filter units contains two or more space-apart and co-axially stacked filter elements encased in a cylindrical-shaped filter cartridge. Contaminated fluid flows from the inlet, through the perforations located on the inlet reservoir separator, and into the elongate container body. Fluid flows into the filter units through perforations in the filter cartridge and the open ends of the filter cartridge. The filter units use an opposed axial flow method to draw the fluid through the filter elements. The filtered fluid flows through a perforation in the axial conduit, passes through the axial conduit outlet into the outlet reservoir. The filtered fluid then exits through the outlet. The present invention may be used in operation with a motor and pump to filter large flow rates and volumes of contaminated fluid.

Pump

The invention provides a pump which has reduced pressure loss by using fewer mechanical on-off valves, which has increased reliability, which can be used under a high load pressure, which can be driven at a high frequency, and which has good drive efficiency by increasing discharge fluid volume per pumping period. A circular diaphragm, disposed at the bottom portion of a case, has its outer peripheral edge secured to and supported by the case. A piezoelectric device to move the diaphragm is disposed at the bottom surface of the diaphragm. A space between the diaphragm and the top wall of the case is a pump chamber. An inlet flow path, having a check valve serving as a fluid resistor disposed thereat, and an outlet flow path, which opens to the pump chamber during operation of the pump, open towards the pump chamber. In the pump, driving of the piezoelectric device is controlled so that an average displacement velocity in a pump chamber volume reducing step of the diaphragm becomes a velocity at which the diaphragm reaches the reached-displacement-position in a time equal to or less than ½ and equal to or greater than 1 / 10 of a natural vibration period T of fluid inside the pump chamber and the outlet flow path.

Procedure for actuating a hydraulic parking brake

A procedure for actuating a parking brake is described, the parking brake comprising a brake piston which is received in a hydraulic chamber and is displaceable within the hydraulic chamber by means of a hydraulic actuator on the one hand and a mechanical actuator on the other. During operation of the parking brake the mechanical actuator is activated in a first step in order to displace the brake piston in the hydraulic chamber in such a way that a volume of a hydraulic fluid contained in the hydraulic chamber is increased. At a subsequent time the hydraulic actuator is activated in order to build up or increase a clamping force of the parking brake. The hydraulically generated or increased clamping force is then maintained by means of the mechanical actuator.

An apparatus for retarding rotation of a nozzle includes a hollow housing, a rotary shaft within the housing, a rotatable rotor on the rotary shaft free to move axially along the shaft, and a cam assembly coupling the rotor and shaft together in the housing such that rotor rotation on the shaft causes the cam assembly to displace the rotor axially on the shaft in a first direction. A set of springs on the shaft biases the rotor in a second direction opposite the first direction on the shaft. Finally, a viscous fluid disposed between the rotor and the housing generates a drag on rotor rotation with the shaft. Relative rotation of the rotor with respect to the shaft in conjunction with a variable gap between the rotor and housing are used to slow and thus control rotary nozzle speed.

Method for calibrating a superheat sensor

A method for calibrating a superheat sensor (5) for a refrigeration system is provided. The method comprises the following steps. Increasing an amount of liquid refrigerant in the evaporator (1), e.g. by increasing an opening degree of the expansion valve (3). Monitoring one or more parameters, e.g. the temperature of refrigerant leaving the evaporator (1), said parameters reflecting a superheat value of the refrigerant. Allowing the value of each of the parameter(s) to decrease. When the value(s) of the monitored parameter(s) reaches a substantially constant level, defining the superheat value corresponding to the constant level to be SH=0. The superheat sensor (5) is then calibrated in accordance with the defined SH=0 level. When the parameter(s) reaches the substantially constant level it is an indication that liquid refrigerant is allowed to pass through the evaporator (1), and thereby that the superheat of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator (1) is zero. Calibration can be performed on site, and it is therefore not necessary to calibrate the sensor (5) at the manufacturing facility. Thereby it is no longer required to match calibration information with a specific sensor.

Demand-based charging of a heat pipe

A heat pipe includes a reservoir of liquid that is connected to a horizontal portion of the heat pipe via a capillary connection. The heat pipe includes a temperature sensor in proximity to a heat interface in the horizontal portion and a controller that controls a heater for the reservoir. As power into the heat pipe increases, the controller turns on the heater, causing the temperature of the liquid in the reservoir to rise. Liquid then passes from the reservoir through the capillary connection into the horizontal portion, thereby dynamically increasing the amount of liquid in the heat pipe, which increases performance of the heat pipe at higher power levels. When the heater is off, as the heat pipe cools, the liquid condenses and flows back through the capillary connection into the reservoir. The result is a heat pipe that provides demand-based charging of the liquid based on power level.

Layered absorbent structure with zoned basis weight

A distinctive absorbent article includes an absorbent core having multiple absorbent layers, wherein the absorbent layers interact in such a manner which preferentially locates absorbed liquid in an appointed, high saturation wicking layer. In additional aspects, at least one primary layer region can have a non-uniform, selectively zoned basis weight distribution. Particular configurations of the at least one primary layer region can be constructed with a target area of the primary layer region having a basis weight which is less than a basis weight of another non-target portion of the primary layer region.

Demand-based charging of a heat pipe

A heat pipe includes one or more reservoirs of liquid that are closed at lower temperatures and open at higher temperatures. The opening of the reservoirs at higher temperatures caused by higher power levels dynamically increases the amount of liquid in the heat pipe, which increases performance of the heat pipe at higher power levels. As the heat pipe cools, the liquid condenses and flows back into the reservoirs. As the heat pipe continues to cool, the reservoirs close. The result is a heat pipe that is more efficient at lower power levels and still maintains high efficiency at higher power levels due to the demand-based charging of the liquid based on temperature.
