[0017] The present invention relates to an improved process for ozone bleaching and delignification of cellulose-lignin pulp. The method is applicable to any kind of pulp produced from lignocellulosic material, for example pulp produced from different kinds of plants mainly containing cellulose and lignin. In a preferred embodiment the pulp is wood pulp. More particularly, in some embodiments the wood pulp is chemical pulp or recycled pulp. The method is generally suitable for pulps of any consistency. In some embodiments, when the pulp comprises a suspension of cellulosic-lignin material in water, the pulp has a concentration of cellulosic-lignin material ranging from about 0.2% to about 50% concentration by weight of the pulp.

Abstract

A process of treating a cellulose-lignin pulp. In an ozone stage, the pulp is contacted with ozone to bleach and delignify the pulp. The ozone stage is conducted without the addition of a peroxide bleaching agent. A chelant is introduced into the ozone stage to improve selectivity of the delignification.

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates generally to methods of treatment of cellulosic-lignin materials and in particular of cellulosic-lignin pulps such as wood pulp. [0002] Wood contains two main components: a fibrous cellulose fraction and a non-fibrous lignin fraction. The polymeric chains forming part of the fibrous cellulose are aligned with each other and form strong associative bonds with adjacent chains.
