158 results about "Auditory feedback" patented technology

Auditory feedback (AF) is an aid used by humans to control speech production and singing. It is assumed that auditory feedback, alongside other feedback mechanisms such as somatosensory feedback and visual feedback, helps to verify whether the current production of a passage of speech or singing is in accord with a person's acoustic-auditory intention. From the viewpoint of movement sciences and neurosciences the acoustic-auditory speech signal can be interpreted as the result of movements (skilled actions) of speech articulators (the lower jaw, lips, tongue, etc.), and thus auditory feedback can be interpreted as a feedback mechanism controlling skilled actions in the same way that visual feedback controls limb movements (e.g. reaching movements).

System for audible feedback for touch screen displays

What is presented is a system and method by which a visually impaired worker could easily and quickly navigate menu options on touch screen displays. An Audible Feedback ON / OFF Switch is provided which turns the audible feedback feature of the present invention on or off. The software monitoring which row / column areas of the touch screen's display grid have been touched by the user in response to a menu option selection is made switchable into one of two modes. A first mode is when the audible feedback feature is OFF or otherwise disabled. In this mode the software operates the touch screen's menu selections in the normal manner in which the machine is intended to perform. When a user selects an option, the option is immediately activated whether it be a machine activity or a jump to another level of menus. A second mode is when the audible feedback feature has been turned ON or otherwise activated. In this mode a two step process is activated such that when a user makes a first touch of a menu option a sound or voice is audibly played indicating the nature of the particular menu option just selected. A second consecutive touch of the same menu option then actually activates the machine activity associated with that particular menu option.

Speech-to-speech translation system with user-modifiable paraphrasing grammars

The present invention discloses a speech-to-speech translation device which allows one or more users to input a spoken utterance in one language, translates the utterance into one or more second languages, and outputs the translation in speech form. Additionally, the device allows for translation both directions, recognizing inputs in the one or more second languages and translating them back into the first language. The device recognizes and translates utterances in a limited domain as in a phrase book translation system, so the translation accuracy is essentially 100%. By limiting the domain the system increases the accuracy of the speech recognition component and thus the accuracy of the overall system. However unlike other phrase book systems, the device also allows wide variations and paraphrasing in the input, so that the user is much more likely to find the desired phrase from the stored list of phrases. The device paraphrases the input to a basic canonical form and performs the translation on that canonical form, ignoring the non-essential variations in the surface form of the input. The device can provide visual and / or auditory feedback to confirm the recognized input and makes the system usable for non-bilingual users with absolute confidence.

Determining stimulation levels for transcranial magnetic stimulation

Induced movement in a patient is detected and correlated with a TMS stimulating pulse so as to determine the patient's motor threshold stimulation level. Direct visual or audible feedback is provided to the operator indicating that a valid stimulation has occurred so that the operator may adjust the stimulation accordingly. A search algorithm may be used to direct a convergence to the motor threshold stimulation level with or without operator intervention. A motion detector is used or, alternatively, the motion detector is replaced with a direct motor evoked potential (MEP) measurement device that measures induced neurological voltage and correlates the measured neurological change to the TMS stimulus. Other signals indicative of motor threshold may be detected and correlated to the TMS stimulus pulses. For example, left / right asymmetry changes in a narrow subset of EEG leads placed on the forehead of the patient or fast autonomic responses, such as skin conductivity, modulation of respiration, reflex responses, and the like, may be detected. The appropriate stimulation level for TMS studies are also determined using techniques other than motor cortex motor threshold methods. For example, a localized ultrasound probe may be used to determine the depth of cortical tissue at the treatment site. When considered along with neuronal excitability, the stimulation level for treatment may be determined. Alternatively, a localized impedance probe or coil and detection circuit whose Q factor changes with tissue loading may be used to detect cortical depth.

Multiple Location Load Control System

A multiple location load control system comprises a main device and remote devices, which do not require neutral connections, but allow for visual and audible feedback at the main device and the remote devices. The main device and the remote devices are adapted to be coupled in series electrical connection between an AC power source and an electrical load, and to be further coupled together via an accessory wiring. The remote devices can be wired on the line side and the load side of the load control system, such that the main device is wired “in the middle” of the load control system. The main device is operable to enable a charging path to allow the remote devices to charge power supplies through the accessory wiring during a first time period of a half-cycle of the AC power source. The main device and the remote devices are operable to communicate with each other via the accessory wiring during a second time period of the half-cycle.

Distinguishing out-of-vocabulary speech from in-vocabulary speech

A speech recognition method includes receiving input speech from a user, processing the input speech using a first grammar to obtain parameter values of a first N-best list of vocabulary, comparing a parameter value of a top result of the first N-best list to a threshold value, and if the compared parameter value is below the threshold value, then additionally processing the input speech using a second grammar to obtain parameter values of a second N-best list of vocabulary. Other preferred steps include: determining the input speech to be in-vocabulary if any of the results of the first N-best list is also present within the second N-best list, but out-of-vocabulary if none of the results of the first N-best list is within the second N-best list; and providing audible feedback to the user if the input speech is determined to be out-of-vocabulary.

Adaptive Audible Feedback Cues for a Vehicle User Interface

A system and a method are provided for adapting a vehicle user interface to generate audible feedback cues when the user interacts with the vehicle interface via touch-sensitive soft buttons and the vehicle speed exceeds a preset speed. When the vehicle speed does not exceed the preset speed, either no audible feedback cues are provided to the user during interaction via the touch-sensitive soft buttons, or the volume level of the audible feedback cues is less than that used when the vehicle speed exceeds the preset speed. The system and method may further utilize a sensor for monitoring the sound level with the vehicle cabin. The sound level of the vehicle cabin may be used to set the volume level of the audible feedback cue, thus insuring for example that the feedback cues may be heard over cabin noise.

Multimodal sensory feedback system and method for treatment and assessment of disequilibrium, balance and motion disorders

The invention relates to a system and method for measuring the biomechanical state of a subject using various sensors simultaneously with providing the subject with visual exercises for rehabilitation and assessment of disequilibrium, balance and motion disorders. The biomechanical state of a subject is measured during the subject's performance of a predetermined task. Such measurements are useful for the assessment of disequilibrium, balance and motion disorders and are also useful for the determination of therapeutic application of vibrotactile, auditory, or visual feedback to a subject during the subject's attempt to perform a predetermined task. An intelligent controller compares the subject's biomechanical state to a predetermined parameter to determine a variance. If the variance exceeds a threshold, feedback in the form of visual feedback, vibrotactile feedback or auditory feedback may be provided to the subject as a therapeutic means for enabling the subject to compensate for disorder effects.
