Embodiment Construction

[0032] figure 1 -5 describes a biopsy system 10 incorporating features of the present invention. The system 10 has a tissue resection system 11 , an imaging system 12 , a display screen 13 and a common input console 14 with a keyboard 15 and a touch screen display 16 . The biopsy system 10 is mounted on a cart 17 having wheels 18 at each corner for portability. The input console 14 has a holder 20 for supporting an ultrasound probe and a tissue ablation probe (not shown).

[0033] The tissue ablation system 11 has connection modules 21 and 22 configured to accommodate tissue ablation probes (not shown), such as those available from the present assignee SenoRx, Inc. and SenoCor 360 probe. Imaging system 12 has connection modules 23, 24 and 25 for connection to various suitable ultrasound probes, such as broadband transducers L14-5 / 38, L14-5W / 60 and C5-2 available from Ultrasonix Medical Corporation / 60. The first two are linear array transducers, and the latter is a cu...

Abstract

A biopsy system is disclosed that has a tissue removal system, an imaging system, an image display system and a common input console for these systems. The tissue removal system can have a mechanical tissue cutting blade or an electrosurgical cutting element and the tissue removal system is capable of handling both tissue cutting configurations. The imaging system is preferably an ultrasound imaging system and the image display system has a video screen for displaying diagnostic ultrasound images from an ultrasound probe. The common input console preferably has a touch screen display and a keyboard to facilitate operation of the tissue removal system, the ultrasound imaging system and the image display system from the same console.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to systems and methods for imaging and resecting tissue from a location in a patient, and more particularly to a biopsy system with an integrated imaging system. Background technique [0002] Currently, one or more imaging systems are used to localize the area or injury of interest in order to find suspicious areas or lesions, and may also be used to direct the biopsy probe of a biopsy system to and / or approach the area of interest area or damage. Subsequently, the tissue sample is excised, and usually, especially in the case of a breast biopsy, markers are placed at the site of lesion resection. [0003] Current biopsy systems are "stand-alone" biopsy systems such as the EnCor® manufactured by SenoRx, Inc. (the present assignee) biopsy system, and other commercially available systems. Diagnostic imaging systems such as ultrasound, x-ray, MRI, PET, CT, thermal, etc. are discrete devices that often require a large "fo...
