Embodiment Construction

[0062] Where materials are referenced herein, those designations are understood to include alloys of materials having similar properties.

[0063] The term "thermal conductivity" is used for heat transfer per square meter of surface area per degree of temperature difference, eg W / mK.

[0064] First refer to figure 1 and 2 , the injection molding nozzle is generally designated by the reference numeral 100 .

[0065] The nozzle 100 comprises a body 1 having a passage 2 therethrough providing a flow path between an inlet 2a and an outlet 2b. An elongated end, generally designated 3, is positioned adjacent to the body 1 . The tip 3 comprises a tip liner 3a having a channel 4 therethrough providing a flow path between an inlet 4a and an outlet 4b.

[0066] The nozzle 100 has a housing or cover 5 which is preferably attached to or integral with heating means (not shown), such as an electrical element. The tip 3 is aligned relative to the mold gate by, for example, a set nut 6 c...

Abstract

An injection moulding tip (3) for an injection moulding nozzle assembly (100) has an inlet (4a) at a first end, at least one outlet (4b) at a second end and a flow path (4) between the inlet (4a) and the outlet (4b). A first portion (26) of the tip (3) adjacent the first end has a first diameter, a second portion (31) adjacent the second end has a second diameter, and a central portion (29) between the first and second portions has a diameter that is greater than the first and second diameters. An injection moulding tip is also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to nozzles for plastic injection molding, and particularly, but not exclusively, to "hot runner" type nozzles. Background technique [0002] In "hot runner" type injection molding, the plastic flows into the mold through a heated nozzle. The plastic flows over the tip, which is usually made of a relatively thermally conductive material such as beryllium copper. This end is usually positioned relative to the opening of the mold gate by a positioning means such as a set nut. This nut is usually made of a material that conducts heat relatively poorly, such as titanium, to insulate the end from the die. [0003] Existing designs suffer from a number of disadvantages. [0004] Many nozzles of the prior art raise the temperature of the plastic inside the nozzle to a peak of tens of degrees above the optimum injection temperature to ensure that the plastic exits the nozzle at around the correct temperature. This is especially...
