The method comprises the following steps of: building graduation searching tables of different meters so as to form a database; acquiring images of the meters, inputting the images of the meters and preprocessing the images so as to extract the effective identification areas of the meter dial plates; extracting pointers and graduation lines from the effective identification areas of the meter dial plates according to the stroke characteristics of the graduation; and matching the extracted graduation lines with the corresponding graduation searching tables in the graduation searching table database according to the extracted pointers and graduation lines so as to automatically identify readings.
