[0016] A multi-hop geocast protocol is a well known method for transmitting information to a group of targets in a wireless ad hoc network. Propagation of message packets within an inter-vehicle ad hoc network is typically dynamic and redundant, as each node forwards messages strictly based on network connectivity. The multi-hop messaging system described herein provides reliable and robust packet delivery even if the message host vehicle is away or its wireless communication is unreliable. Furthermore, the multi-hop messaging system optimizes the number of vehicles rebroadcasting the message such that only a small number of extra redundant packets (as tolerable) are sent in trade-off to significantly improve the reliability of message delivery.
