Problems solved by technology

The disadvantage is that the user's premises (CPE) equipment (CPE) needs to store the capacity of the data volume
The main advantage of streaming is that the user does not need to store data in his device, but the disadvantage is that if the user wants to watch the same video again, he has to stream it again from the network
So it's not actually traffic management

Embodiment Construction

[0081] image 3 Shown is a network structure comprising network structure levels I, II, III, IV, V with at least one customer premises equipment CPE at a customer premises, first mile access equipment for connecting the CPE to the network, comprising A metro aggregation device of a local video server (LVS) storing distributed copies of video data files and an edge router device for distributing data traffic in the network and a core network application with at least one video headend ( VHE) utilizes the local video server LVS to store a plurality of original video data files in the network according to the present invention.

[0082] The gist of the present invention lies in an additional common control plane between network nodes and local video servers in addition to the existing control plane. Customer premises equipment is entirely outside the scope of the present invention. Another object of the invention is to hide new features of the CPE in order to keep them availabl...

Abstract

The invention describes a method and system for a Traffic Management of the Video on Demand Services in a preferably worldwide network. A System for a Traffic Management of the Video on Demand Services and Video Data Transfer in worldwide networks is implemented with an Additional Control Plane (ACP) between Network Nodes (NN) and Local Video Servers (LVS), wherein it is implemented with means at each of the Network Structure Levels (I, II, III, IV, V), which allows a CPE to locate at least one available video data source storing the requested video data file among Local Video Servers (LVS) and, if not found, loading it from a Video Head End (VHE) to a LVS, and to choose the one among them with the best video data transfer performance for connecting a video session to the requesting CPE.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and system for traffic management of video-on-demand services and video data transmission in a network, also to a video traffic management protocol and to a global network, as defined in the preambles of the independent claims. Background technique [0002] It is well known that video-on-demand services consume high traffic in the network. For example, a single video stream requires 2-3Mbps, while for HDTV, 8-12Mbps is required according to the MPEG4 standard. [0003] Due to the nature of VoD services, video data traffic grows with the bandwidth consumed by each additional user in the network requesting the service. Therefore, it is difficult to calculate the bandwidth requirements for the network to support the service. To compare them, a voice over IP stream requires about 100kbps of available bandwidth. For each session, VoD traffic consumes about one hundred times more bandwidth. Therefore, it is not p...
