Embodiment Construction

[0026] figure 1 An occupant detection system 10 is shown for a vehicle having a plurality of vehicle seats disposed therein. The vehicle seats include a driver's seat 12, individual passenger seats 14, and a bench 16 equivalent to three passenger seats. It should be noted that the shown distribution of seats and their number may differ from the actual configuration in the vehicle. Each vehicle seat 12, 14, 16 has a seating area in which an electret vibration sensor 18 is fitted. The electret vibration sensor 18 is connected to the electronic control unit 20 through the wiring 22 and the connecting groove 24 .

[0027] The electronic control unit 20 includes an amplifier 26 and a filter 28 for amplifying and filtering the signal from the electret vibration sensor 18, respectively. The amplified and filtered signal is multiplexed in a multiplexer 30 which couples the amplifiers and filters with a processing unit 32 (e.g. Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), Field P...

Abstract

An automotive vehicle includes an occupant detection system (10) for detecting an occupancy state of one or more passenger seats. The occupant detection system comprises a control unit (20), one or more vibration sensors (18) operatively connected to the control unit, each one of the one or more vibration sensors being arranged in a respective one of the passenger seats, and at least one vibration sensor that is arranged in the driver seat and operatively connected to the control unit so as to provide a reference signal to the control unit.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to occupant detection systems for motor vehicles, and in particular to such systems comprising vibration sensors disposed in vehicle seats, for example for detecting the occupant's heart rate and / or respiration rate. Background technique [0002] It is well known that vibration sensors are used to detect the presence or absence of a vehicle seat occupant. For example, US 2005 / 0027416 A1 discloses a heart rate detection system for use in vehicles. A first acceleration or vibration sensor is arranged in the vehicle seat and a second such sensor is arranged on the vehicle floor. When the seat is occupied, the first sensor receives vibrations caused by the occupant's heart rate. However, since vibrations originating from the environment are also picked up, the heart rate signal may be masked by this clutter. A second sensor located away from the occupant would receive vibrations from the environment, eg from vehic...
