Embodiment Construction

[0026] figure 1 A lawn mower 10 of the rotary mower type is shown comprising an embodiment of a motor assembly according to the invention comprising an electric motor 11 and a control unit 12 forming an electronically commutated motor. The lawn mower 10 includes a frame 13 on which the motor assembly is supported. In application, the frame 13 also supports the fuselage 14 and supports the axles supporting the ground engaging wheels 15 . Mowing blade 16 is mounted on the drive shaft of motor 11, and lawn mower 10 includes a grass box 17 for receiving grass debris cut by blade 16 from the lawn. Although the invention is described in terms of a lawnmower, it should be understood that the invention can be applied generally to electronically commutated electric motors. The lawn mower shown is substantially as described in our earlier application WO2008 / 015479 to which further reference should be made. The lawn mower motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery.

Abstract

We describe an electronically commutated motor assembly. The motor assembly includes a motor housing (20) which includes a motor housing aperture (52) and a sensor housing (42) within which one or more Hall effect sensors (44) are located. The sensor housing (42) is adapted to engage said motor housing aperture (52) to position said one or more Hall effect sensors (44) in slots between teeth of stator laminations of the motor.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to electric motors. In particular, the invention relates to electronically commutated or brushless electric motors. Background technique [0002] In our earlier application WO2008 / 015479 we described the use of electronically commutated (EC) electric motors in battery powered lawnmowers. The entire electric motor and its associated electronics are constructed as a monolithic unit. EC motors are well known per se and will not be described in detail. An important role of the EC motor is to use three Hall effect sensors to detect the position and rotational speed of the rotor containing the permanent magnets. To do this, the Hall effect sensor needs to be very precise and exactly located between the teeth of the motor's stator laminations and a maximum of 1.8mm from the surface of the rotating magnets of the rotor. The only way to maintain this positioning in the mechanical environment of the lawnmower is to enclose the s...
