[0087] Increased adhesion of neutrophils is one of the first steps in the intravascular inflammatory process. Neutrophils and their high content of NAD(P)H oxidase have a major role in the generation of vascular ROS (reactive oxidizing species). These oxidative free radicals interact with and reduce vascular NO levels, and act as the major vasodilator in the vessel wall. Vascular oxidative stress has been demonstrated in spontaneously and experimentally hypertensive animals. Clinical studies have demonstrated increased ROS production and decreased NO levels in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, any intervention that reduces oxidative stress or increases NO bioavailability reduces BP levels in hypertensive patients.

Abstract

The present invention relates to methods and compositions effective in lowering blood pressure. The compositions comprise, as active ingredients, an effective amount of a combination of lycopene and a carotenoid, e.g., lutein. In a preferred embodiment, the lycopene and lutein together provide a synergistic therapeutic effect at lowering blood pressure. The compositions can further comprise additional agents such as carotenoids and other phytochemicals found in tomato oleoresin.
