[0050] Tables 1-4 below show the following experimental data. These examples show the significant effect of increasing the channel length, and thus the channel temperature of the ribbon burner head assembly 500, on reducing the flame noise characteristics. It should be noted that the burners evaluated in Tables 2-4 differ primarily in that each port of the ribbon burner head assembly has a different depth (ie, channel length). The meanings of the marked values used in Tables 2-4 are as follows in Table 1, where the values in the left column correspond to various empirically derived noise levels, however the term "Out" refers to the burner burning air instead of Not impact backing rolls:

Abstract

Disclosure is made of methods, systems, and apparatus for changing characteristics of noise of premixed flames supported on burners by heating burner passageways by an amount that attenuates combustion noises arising from premixed flames. Alternatively, attenuation occurs by controlling a temperature differential between a first point relative to a premixed flame and at least a second point in anuncombusted portion of a fuel/oxidizer mixture causing the flame.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates generally to methods, systems and apparatus for modifying noise characteristics, and more particularly to methods, systems and apparatus for modifying noise characteristics by attenuating combustion noise from premixed flames. [0002] Fluctuations caused by combustion are a form of combustion instabilities that typically occur in premixed flames. This instability often takes the form of noise, such as whine. Howling is generally considered to be unbearable noise, usually manifested in the range of 100-1000Hz, and the intensity can be as high as about 120dB. [0003] Chirping can be short or continuous. Typically, short whistling occurs at the ignition of the flame and disappears after a relatively short period of time (eg, seconds or minutes). The short whistling can be considered unbearable. In contrast, continuous whistling may continue as long as the burner is running. Continuous squealing is considered more un...
