Abstract

A wind turbine blade system (200) having a blade (108) rotatably attached to a rotor (106) of a wind turbine (100). The system further includes a controller (605) and one or more openings (203) disposed along at least one surface of the blade (108) and a fluid moving device (207) arranged and disposed to provide a fluid to or from the one or more openings (203). A controlled amount of the fluid is provided to the one or more opening (203). The amount of fluid is determined by the controller (605).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to wind turbines and, in particular, to systems and methods for altering the aerodynamic properties of wind turbine blades. Background technique [0002] As the demand for alternative energy sources continues, the utilization of wind energy and wind turbines has received increasing attention. Wind energy can be considered one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly energy sources currently available. Unlike traditional fossil fuel resources, wind energy is completely renewable and produces no harmful or environmentally damaging by-products. With the increasing focus on generating more energy from wind energy, technological advances in the art have allowed wind turbines to increase in size and allow new designs of wind turbine components. As the physical size and availability of wind turbines increases, so does the need to balance the cost of manufacturing wind turbines with the cost of operating wind ...
