Abstract

A switchgear (5) comprising a gas-filled enclosure (30), an input conductor (33), an actuator (50, 159, 550) and a short-circuit device (43, 51, 500). The actuator (50) is arranged to actuate the short circuit means (43, 51) when a first arc (62) occurs in the enclosure (30). The short circuit device (500) when actuated creates a short circuit between the input conductor (33) and the housing (30) or a discrete ground point (560) through the solid insulation (42). The actuator (50) may be arranged to act on an increase in pressure in the housing (30) when the first arc (62) occurs. The gas can be air or SF6. The short circuit device (43, 51) may, when actuated, produce a short circuit through a section (543) of solid cable insulation (42) isolating the input conductor (33) from the housing (30).
