Embodiment Construction

[0024] figure 1 A process control system 10 is shown including a surface mount pressure transmitter 12 and a control chamber 14 . Pressure transmitter 12 including COPLANAR TM A differential pressure sensor that senses the pressure differential between pressure P1 and pressure P2 in the process fluid and then transmits an electrical signal to control chamber 14 via control circuit 16 . Control room 14 also supplies power to transmitter 12 from power source 18 via control loop 16 . Control loop 16 also enables communication system 20 to send data from control room 14 to transmitter 12 and receive data from transmitter 12 . In various implementations, control loop 16 and communication system 12 are communicated through, for example, FOUNDATION TM Digital network protocols such as Fieldbus, or such as 4-20mA HART The system operates like a simulated network protocol operation. In other embodiments, the transmitter 12 and the control room 14 communicate via a wireless networ...

Abstract

A process transmitter for measuring a process variable in an industrial process comprises a sensor module, a heating device and transmitter circuitry. The sensor module has a sensor for sensing a process variable of an industrial process and generating a sensor signal. The heating device is connected to the sensor module for generating a heat pulse to influence generation of the sensor signal. The transmitter circuitry is connected to the sensor and the heating device. The transmitter circuitry verifies operation of the sensor by measuring a change in the sensor signal due to the heat pulse. In one embodiment of the invention, the heat pulse thermally expands a volume of a fill fluid within the process transmitter. In another embodiment, the heat pulse changes a physical property, such as dielectric, of a fill fluid within the process transmitter.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to industrial process transmitters for use in industrial process control systems. More specifically, the present invention relates to diagnostic systems for verifying the performance of process transmitters. Background technique [0002] Process instrumentation is used to monitor process parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow and level of process fluids used in industrial processes. For example, process transmitters are typically employed in industrial manufacturing facilities at multiple locations to monitor process parameters along various production lines. Process transmitters include sensors that produce electrical outputs in response to physical changes in process parameters. For example, pressure transmitters include those that generate an electrical output as a function of the pressure of a process fluid, such as in a water supply line, chemical tank, or the like. Each process transmitter also i...
