Abstract

A high-speed sleeveless rotor for an electric machine is provided. The rotor includes a shaft (108) rotatable about a longitudinal axis, and a rotor core (148) circumscribing at least a portion of the shaft, the rotor core including an axially oriented slot (306), the slot including a radially outer slot opening, a radially inner slot floor (320,604), and a slot sidewall extending therebetween, the slot floor including a topstick attachment member (322) extending radially outward from the slot floor and configured to engage a topstick (316) positioned in the slot opening (318), the slot sidewall comprising a shoulder configured to engage the topstick, preventing radially outward movement of the topstick.

Description

technical field [0001] The field of the invention relates generally to synchronous machines for aircraft engines, and more particularly to apparatus and systems for sleeveless high speed engine starter / generator rotors. Background technique [0002] At least some known synchronous machine rotors rotate at high rotational rates. The centrifugal force acting on a component accommodated in the rotor is related to the mass of the component, the rotational speed of the rotor and the distance from the center of rotation of the rotor to the component. To contain the rotor components within the rotor casing, known rotors utilize stacked laminations of the rotor and sleeves into which the components are pressed. The rotor closure sleeve maintains rotor stresses at acceptable levels. However, the rotor closure sleeve also increases the assembled weight of the rotor, and thus the synchronous machine, and increases the air gap distance between the main rotor and the stator, reducing t...
