A wind turbine for generating electrical power from wind energy includes a turbine rotor mounted for rotation in wind, and having multiple blades for converting energy in the wind into rotational energy. A generator is coupled with said turbine rotor such that said turbine rotor drives said generator. The generator has a stationary air core armature that is located in a magnetic airgap between two generator rotor portions. The generator rotor portions have circumferential arrays of multiple alternating polarity permanent magnets attached to ferromagnetic back irons such that the permanent magnets drive magnetic flux back and forth between each rotor portion and through the stationary air core armature. The stationary air core armature has multiple phase windings of multiple individually insulated strand conductor wire that is wound with two separate portions including an active length portion and an end turn portion. The end turn portion is located outside the magnetic airgap and traverses predominately circumferentially, and the active length portion is located in the magnetic airgap and traverses predominately non-circumferentially and perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic airgap. The end turn portion has a thickness that is greater than the thickness of said active length portion in the direction of said magnetic airgap. AC voltage is induced in the multiple phase windings as the turbine rotor rotates.

An electric drive unit includes an electronic control and monitoring module integrally connected to an electric motor. The housing of the electric motor has a double-walled construction to form a water jacket with cooling water passages therein. The electronic module includes at least one high power component that requires cooling. This component is mounted directly on a cooling insert that extends through a recess in the electronic module housing and is inserted in an opening provided in the outer wall of the motor housing. In this manner, the cooling insert is integrated into the water jacket of the motor housing and is directly cooled by the cooling water flowing in the cooling passages. A very compact and reliable construction is achieved, in which the electric motor and the electronic module share a common water cooling circuit. External water hoses and external electrical connections between the electric motor and the electronic module are avoided.

Motor rotor cooling with rotation heat pipes

A heat pipe is partially-filled with a liquid, such as water, and is used to transfer heat from a rotating element, such as a rotor, via phase change and internal recycle of the liquid. Several heat pipes may be disposed radially around the rotating axis of the rotating element. The heat pipes may have a curved inner surface with a curvature not corresponding to the central axis of the heat pipe and positioned opposite the rotating axis so to experience greater centrifugal forces, to advance formation of a liquid film to improve heat transfer. For a rotor, the heat pipes, though individually placed as revolving heat pipes, in total exhibit behavior that approximates the favorable heat-transfer behavior of a single larger rotating heat pipe, but with heat-transfer surface area dispersed throughout the rotor, and without compromising structural integrity of the rotor shaft.

A plurality of coils wound around a stator magnetic-pole core are connected together and connected to output wires by use of a bus bar. The bus bar having a generally cylindrical body portion is disposed at one axial end of the stator magnetic-pole core, around which the coils are wound such that clearances are formed within magnetic-pole core slots, with an axial clearance formed between the bus bar and the coils. The body portion has such a radial dimension that at least a portion of the clearances within the magnetic-pole core slots is left uncovered. Air holes are formed in the motor housing on opposite sides of the stator magnetic-pole core to thereby form cooling air passages extending through the magnetic-pole core slots.

A motor driven assembly includes a motor having a motor shaft mounted for rotation about a rotational axis and a rotor radially located about the shaft. The motor drives a compressor that receives air from the motor, compresses the air, and circulates the compressed air to a space. The motor includes a first cooling flow passage and a second cooling flow passage that each receive air to provide internal cooling of the motor. A portion of the air compressed in the compressor is diverted from the compressor to a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger cools the compressed air from before the air circulates into the first cooling flow passage to cool the motor. The second cooling flow passage receives air from the environment surrounding the motor driven assembly to further cool the motor.

An apparatus for converting between mechanical and electrical energy, particularly suited for use as a compact high power alternator for automotive use and “remove and replace” retrofitting of existing vehicles. The apparatus comprises a rotor with permanent magnets, a stator with a winding, and a cooling system. Mechanisms to prevent the rotor magnets from clashing with the stator by minimizing rotor displacement, and absorbing unacceptable rotor displacement are disclosed. The cooling system directs coolant flow into thermal contact with at least one of the winding and magnets, and includes at least one passageway through the stator core. Various open and closed cooling systems are described. Cooling is facilitated by, for example, loosely wrapping the winding end turns, use of an asynchronous airflow source, and / or directing coolant through conduits extending through the stator into thermal contact with the windings.
