An energy supply and storage system for a rig power supply system is disclosed for a rig power supply system of the type having a power generator coupled to rig loads and motors via a bus. The energy supply and storage device is a power supply in parallel with the rig motors and adapted for receiving energy generated by the generator in excess of demand. The energy storage system is in communication with the power supply for receiving and storing the excess energy, with the power supply being adapted to draw energy from the storage system when the rig motor demand exceeds the capacity of the generator.

A driving device of a work machine includes a power generator adapted to be driven by an engine, and a power storage device for storing the electric power generated by the power generator. A portable electric nailing gun operating from a power supply. The motor accelerates a flywheel which at the appropriate energy state is coupled through a mechanism to an anvil acting directly on the nail. The actuation is governed by a control circuit and initiated from a trigger switch. The motor accelerates a flywheel that is then clutched to the output anvil causing the nail to be driven. The position of the output anvil is sensed and once the nail is driven, the motor is dynamically braked reducing the excess energy in the flywheel. The controller may examine jobs to be performed at the time as well as predictive information that may affect the building's energy needs (e.g., the predicted temperature for the time of the predicted energy needs). As expectations change (or as predicted factors such as temperature change), the energy company may be informed of the additional energy that will be needed (e.g., if the predicted temperature is increasing and cooling will be needed) or the excess energy that is expected (e.g., if the predicted temperature is decreasing and less cooling will be needed).

An actively controlled regenerative snubber configuration for use in unipolar brushless direct current motors comprises a first inductor, a first switch and a capacitor, all of which are connected in series to a positive voltage supply and in parallel with a second inductor and a second switch. The regenerative snubber is used to maintain constant voltage across the switches to prevent braking of the motor through conduction of motor back EMF and to return excess energy stored in the motor phase coils to the positive voltage supply. The return of energy to the positive rail is done in a manner so as to minimize conducted electromagnetic interference at the power leads.

The use of anti-friction ball bearings in a unique arrangement does not require the use of lubricating oil from the internal combustion engine lubricating system and permits close coupling of the bearings and a compact turbocharger. The coolant jacket protects the anti-friction bearings from exposure to the extreme heat of the exhaust gas driven turbine, notwithstanding their increased proximity due to the shortened turbocharger shaft. In addition, an external motor-generator may be carried by the compact turbocharger, and its motor may be connected to the turbocharger rotor assembly by a permanent, solid connector and stay connected throughout the entire operating range of the turbocharger. In such assembly, the electronic motor-generator control is mounted on the motor housing and energizes the motor from battery power during the engine acceleration period up to approximately the torque peak speed; thereafter, the control changes to a generator mode when excess energy is available in the engine exhaust gas.

A sag corrector apparatus for providing voltages temporarily (ride-through) to a load during momentary electrical disturbances in the power supply line. In one embodiment, the disclosed apparatus compensates for voltage sags by using a variable duty cycle boost converter to boost the sagged line voltage to resemble desired voltage levels during occurrence of voltage sags. The boosted voltage available to a connected load during a sag depends on a sequence of operation of various control pulses. Duty cycle of the boost converter is controlled by changing the width (duration) of the control pulses. To prevent voltage shoot-throughs from over-boosting, an energy clamp circuit is provided to dissipate excess energy. Embodiments of the sag corrector circuit can be additionally integrated with power protection functions.
