However, this measure does not make the best use of potential performance in wide regimes where there is a tolerance for AEL
In other words, although it is legal to further increase the brightness in the wide state, the brightness cannot be increased

Embodiment Construction

[0019] Hereinafter, means for carrying out the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0020] The present invention relates to a projector that uses a two-dimensional microdisplay such as a liquid crystal panel and a DMD as an image modulation device, and applies red light (R), green light (G) and blue light (B) to the image modulation device , and the image is enlarged and projected through the projection lens. Specifically, the present invention designs a projector having a laser light source as a light source and a zoom lens as a projection lens.

[0021] First, the basic principle of the present invention will be described in detail.

[0022] In the case of using a laser instead of an existing discharge lamp as a light source of a projector, key points in terms of product competitiveness of the projector are how the projector can be sufficiently practical, and how the projector must comply with the safety standard of the laser beam ( IE...

Abstract

A projector using a laser light source is obtained with safety and high brightness. The projector irradiates a laser beam emitted from a laser light source (101) to an image modulation device (105) and enlarges and projects an image formed on the image modulation device (105) by using a zoom lens (106). The projector has a control means (108) for controlling, according to the focal distance change of the zoom lens (106), the energy amount of the laser beam so that the energy density of the laser beam emerging on the light exit surface of the zoom lens (106) is maintained to be a predetermined value or less. The predetermined value is equal to the energy density of the laser beam obtained when the focal distance of the zoom lens (106) is set to the shortest distance and also equal to an accessible emission limit value (AEL value) that satisfies a laser safety class of the projector.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a projector using a laser light source, and to a control method thereof. Background technique [0002] For projectors, research and development of products using solid light sources instead of discharge lamps have been actively conducted for the purpose of improving performance and reducing size and cost. For example, rear projection televisions and pocket projectors using LED light sources have been manufactured on a commercial basis. [0003] For solid-state light sources for projectors, laser light sources are considered to be contracted with LEDs. Everyone can find that laser light sources have high potential performance as a light source, but projectors using laser light sources have not been put into practical use. This is not only because an inexpensive semiconductor laser emitting green light has not been put into practical use, but also because various rules are required in the characteristics of a laser ligh...
