Abstract

A drug delivery device (5, 5', 5", 5"') for delivering an aerosol comprising a drug to a patient, comprising an aerosol generator (45, 50 , 55, 60) and a mouthpiece assembly (30, 30', 30", 30"') configured to be inserted into a patient's mouth. The mouthpiece assembly is operatively connected to the aerosol generator for receiving and delivering the aerosol to the patient. The mouthpiece assembly has an abdominal surface (85, 85', 85") configured to face the patient's tongue (100) when the mouthpiece assembly is inserted into the patient's mouth, and may include a tongue tip positioning element ( 90, 90', 90"', 105). The abdominal surface and, if present, the tongue tip positioning element are configured to engage the patient's tongue tip (95) to properly position the tongue during use of the drug delivery device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application claims the benefit of priority under 35 USC § 119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 216,022, filed May 11, 2009, entitled "Suction Mouth with Guide Tongue," the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference refer to. [0002] The present invention relates to the oral administration of aerosolized microparticles to the lungs by a recipient. More particularly, the present invention relates to mouthpieces that guide a recipient during drug delivery to achieve and maintain a tongue position that reduces deposition of aerosolized particles in the oropharynx without restricting free passage of air. Background technique [0003] Inhalers, nebulizers, applicators, etc. devices that produce a colloidal suspension of dry or "wet" particles in the air (ie, an "aerosol") are common. The device may provide the energy required for aerosolization, or the user of the device may do so substantially by applying suction generate...
