Embodiment Construction

[0033] Now, refer to figure 1 , in an example workflow 10 that can be implemented by the present invention, a medical pump 12 (eg, a syringe pump or a peristaltic pump) can be preloaded with a desired drug 14 (eg, drug or contrast medium). In one embodiment, the medication 14 may be contained, for example, in a flexible pouch 16 that communicates via a tube 18 with a connector 20 for attachment to a patient or a sterile needle. Typically, tubing 18 may engage within the pumping structure of pump 12, wherein the pumping structure may provide a controlled flow of medication to the patient, as understood in the art.

[0034] Next, each of the pump 12, bag 16, tubing 18 and connector 20 may be loaded into a carrier 22, such as part of a pneumatic cartridge 24 or a container that fits within a standard pneumatic cartridge 24, pneumatically Cartridge 24 is adapted to be conveyed by hospital pneumatic system 26 for transport within the hospital. To this end, the pump 12, bag 16, tu...

Abstract

The invention relates to a medical pump providing customizable programming permissions. A method and apparatus for delivering intravenous drugs to a patient provides for remote loading and programming of IV pumps that may be shipped in a loaded and programmed configuration to a remote site for use with the patient. A special carrier may be provided for pneumatic delivery of the preloaded pump. Password enabled customizing of pump features according to specific need of a user may be provided to prevent undesired changing of the pump parameters at the remote site.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 589,204, filed January 20, 2012, entitled "System for Remote Programming and Loading of Medical Pumps," and also claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 493,680, entitled "Concepts of Customizing Infusion Pumps," filed June 6, 2011, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference . technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a medical pump for delivering drug to a patient at a controlled rate and dose, and in particular to a pump adapted for remote loading and assembly. Background technique [0004] Medical pumps such as syringe pumps or peristaltic infusion pumps are known for delivering medicines or contrast media (hereinafter referred to as medicines) to a patient over a period of time under computer control. Typically, the drug is delivered with a syringe (for syringe pumps) or a flexible bag (fo...
