[0019] PRIOR ART Cross-flow cooling towers are described in U.S. Patent No. 6,070,860 (1999) to Kinney et al. (which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety) and U.S. Patent No. 5,180,528 to Kaplan (which is also incorporated by reference in its entirety). incorporated herein). This disclosure describes a hot water tank distribution system that may be used, integrated or incorporated in a cross flow column as disclosed and described in US Patent No. 6,070,860 or US Patent No. 5,180,528 and may also be combined with the One or more components of the cooling tower are used. For example, the side distribution pipes and hot water tanks described herein can be used to replace the hot water distributors 32 or tanks and hot water distribution pans disclosed in the cooling tower(s) shown and described in U.S. Patent No. 6,070,860 90. Also, for example, the side distribution pipes and hot water tanks described herein can be used to replace all or part of the distribution ...

Abstract

A cooling tower with a hot water distribution system includes a distribution lateral disposed above a hot water basin. The distribution lateral discharges fluid into the hot water basin, which in turn, releases the fluid through a plurality of orifices. As the fluid is released, it falls on heat-exchanging fill material that assists in increasing the cooling rate of the fluid. The distribution lateral is configured structurally to discharge the fluid through a plurality of outlets at one or more angles (as compared to the horizontal) into the hot water basins. In one embodiment, the outlets are arranged into one or more rows that extend along a substantial length of the distribution lateral. Discharging the fluid in this manner enhances and promotes a more even fluid flow within the hot water basin, which results in a more even fluid flow over and onto the fill material, thereby increasing thermal efficiency.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to cooling towers, and more particularly to hot water tanks and distribution systems for use in cooling towers, including cross-flow cooling towers. Background technique [0002] Most cooling towers are classified as open or closed. Open cooling towers are usually arranged as a cross-flow or counter-flow design. Conventional cross-flow cooling towers have cooling water flowing downward and air flowing perpendicular to the cooling fluid flow. In contrast, conventional counterflow cooling towers have cooling water flowing downward and air flowing parallel to the water flow. [0003] Fluid distribution systems in cooling towers are generally of two types: gravity and spray, with spray systems typically used in counterflow towers and gravity systems used in crossflow towers. In spray distribution systems, spray nozzles are mounted to the distribution pipe. In a gravity distribution system, a hot water reservoir (often refe...
