Problems solved by technology

However, a disadvantage of applying this technology to PCB spindles is that, at the high speeds required to drill very small holes, considerable heat is generated inside the bearing due to gas film shear stress.

Embodiment Construction

[0065] figure 1 A portion of a high speed PCB drilling spindle is shown schematically, which is conventional in many respects. The PCB drilling spindle is an air bearing spindle and includes two radial air bearing assemblies 1 housed within a main body portion 2 of the spindle. A shaft 3 carrying a tool holder 4 is journalled within a radial air bearing 1 . A motor 5 is provided for driving said shaft 3 in rotation relative to the body part 2 , the motor 5 consisting of a stator 51 arranged in the body part 2 and a winding 52 placed on the shaft 4 . The tool holder 4 is configured for holding a tool, in this example a drilling tool for drilling holes in PCB material. An axial air bearing assembly 6 is provided acting on a thrust runner 31 provided at the end of the shaft 3 remote from the tool holder 4 .

[0066] as described above figure 1 As far as the drilling spindle is concerned, it is conventional. Therefore, for the sake of brevity, a detailed description of its ...

Abstract

A gas bearing assembly for a gas bearing spindle. The assembly comprises a housing portion (11) and an inner radial bearing portion (10) disposed within and resiliently mounted relative to the housing portion. The inner radial bearing portion comprises an inner shell bearing portion (12) having a bearing face, and an intermediate sleeve portion (14) which is disposed between the inner shell bearing portion and the housing portion. A liquid coolant channel (7) is provided between the inner bearing shell portion (12) and the intermediate sleeve portion (14). The assembly further comprises an anti-rotation plug (601, 901) which is received in both the housing portion (11) and the inner bearing portion (10) to couple the housing portion and the inner bearing portion against relative rotation.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to gas bearing spindles and gas bearing assemblies for gas bearing spindles. Background technique [0002] There is particular interest in gas bearing spindles suitable for high speed drilling applications such as PCB (Printed Circuit Board) drilling. In a PCB drilling machine, it is desirable to have a machine capable of drilling holes of a wide range of different diameters and correspondingly at a wide range of different speeds. Thus, for example, it would be desirable to provide a machine capable of drilling a 6.3 mm diameter hole at, say, 15,000-20,000 rpm at one limit of calibration, and still capable of drilling at, say, 200,000 rpm or 300,000 rpm at another limit of calibration. Drilling holes with a diameter of, for example, 0.1mm to 0.2mm at a high speed. Furthermore, the holes need to be drilled with high precision, generally requiring high quality holes in printed circuit boards. [0003] When drilling at nea...
