[0045] The description will begin with a description of the overall system and then, before presenting the final solution, describe an example that presents a part of the final solution.

[0046] figure 1 An example of a general audio system with a codec system is schematically shown in . The audio source node 10 causes an audio signal 16 . The audio signal 16 is processed in an audio encoder 14 which produces a binary flux comprising data representing the audio signal 16 . An audio encoder 14 is typically included in the transmitter 12 . Such a transmitter may eg be part of a communication network node. An audio encoder typically comprises one or several encoder devices, which are discussed further below. The binary stream 22 can be transmitted by the transmitter via the transmission interface 20 , for example in the case of multimedia communication. Alternativel...

Abstract

A method for encoding of an audio signal comprises performing (214) of a transform of the audio signal. An energy offset is selected (216) for each of the first subbands. An energy measure of a first reference band within a low band of an encoding of a synthesis signal is obtained (212). The first high band is encoded (220) by providing quantization indices representing a respective scalar quantization of a spectrum envelope in the first subbands of the first high band relative to the energy measure of the first reference band by use of the selected energy offset. An encoder apparatus comprises means for carrying out the steps of the method. Corresponding decoder methods and apparatuses are also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to encoding / decoding of audio signals, and in particular to methods and apparatus for efficient low bitrate audio encoding / decoding. Background technique [0002] When an audio signal is to be transmitted and / or stored, it is standard today to encode the audio signal into a digital representation according to various schemes. In order to save memory and / or transmission capacity, it is generally desirable to reduce the size of the digital representation required to allow reconstruction of the audio signal with sufficient quality. The balance between the size of the encoded signal and the signal quality depends on the actual application. [0003] Various encoding principles exist. Transform-based audio encoders compress audio signals by quantizing transform coefficients. This encoding thus works in the transformed frequency domain. Transform-based audio coders are efficient for medium and high bitrate encoding ...
