A hydraulic system (10) comprising: an electronically controlled backpressure valve (60) such that the backpressure in the return line (36) of the system is varied via a control unit (64). This system allows active control of the pressure in the return line to generate different back pressures for different situations. A higher return line pressure can be set to improve makeup or recirculation flow through the anti-cavitation valve (50). This can improve the controllability of functions that benefit from backpressure, such as shedding loads (12).
