Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communications system

ActiveUS7333455B1Minimize waterMinimize ground bounce nullPower managementModulated-carrier systemsPolarization diversityFrequency spectrum
A wireless broadband communications system that can transmit signals over communications links with multiple modes of diversity, thereby allowing signals having very low correlation to propagate over the link along multiple orthogonal paths. The system can be implemented as a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) system or a line-of-sight (LOS) system. The NLOS system employs orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM) waveforms to reduce multi-path interference and frequency selective fading, adaptive modulation to assure high data rates in the presence of channel variability, and spectrum management to achieve increased data throughput and link availability. The LOS system employs space-time coding and spatial and polarization diversity to minimize ground bounce nulls. The system achieves levels of link availability, data throughput, and system performance that have heretofore been unattainable in wireless broadband communications systems.

Navigation system and method

A novel mapping paradigm is provided for the visual display of information in the form of an improved navigational aid. Unlike today's road maps which use a point-arc-polygon paradigm, the new mapping paradigm uses a compressed linear-pictographic-topological design that typically depicts roads as vertical linear pictograms. Further, the display has a columnar layout, whereby the descriptive elements are grouped together by type, and displayed one above the other in columns. In this manner, the mapping paradigm also serves to increase traveler safety, provide navigation assistance during address-less trips, create valuable advertising space and new promotional opportunities, and dramatically increases the travelers' communications and entertainment options.

Intelligent adaptive modulation in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communications system

A wireless broadband communications system that can maintain high data rates while taking into account channel interference resulting from operating in shared frequency bands, signal fading resulting from dynamic channel degradation, and signal distortion resulting from compliance with maximum power output regulations. In one mode of operation, the system performs adaptive modulation by transmitting a first signal over a selected channel using a first modulation mode having a level of distortion associated therewith resulting from operating the system at a predetermined maximum power output level. Next, a SINAD level is measured on the first channel. The level of distortion associated with the first modulation mode is then subtracted from the measured SINAD level to obtain a first noise level. In the event the first noise level is less than a noise level required to achieve an acceptable error rate in a next modulation mode, a second signal is transmitted over the selected channel using the next modulation mode.

Presenting independent images on multiple display devices from one set of control signals

Multiple independent images are presented on multiple display devices by driving the display devices with a common set of control signals and a multiplexed set of data signals that convey information representing interleaved components of each independent image. In a preferred embodiment, a unique clock signal is provided to each respective display device that is aligned with the interleaved components of the image to be presented by that respective display. The control, data and clock signals may be obtained by multiplexing control and data signals received from display pipeline circuits, or by generating the, signals using a composite circuit that implements the features of two or more multiplexed display pipeline circuits.

Motion estimation architecture for area and power reduction

A method for compensating for reduced picture quality when combining a multi-chip encoding chipset into a single integrated semiconductor IC. The method includes additional functions provided on the single IC to compensate for the negative effects on picture quality produced as a result of rounding 8 bit luminance pixel data to 5 bits, where the luminance data values are supplied as input to the search function. The additional functions are collectively referred to as motion biasing and are applied to influence the choice of a "best match" motion type, which is well known in the art. The biasing is performed by the addition of a weight factor to a total difference result that is calculated by the search function. The biasing is applied only for the purpose of influencing the choice of a reference frame that is not necessarily the frame which produces an optimal motion vector, but rather will result in using fewer bits to encode macroblocks.
