The method includes: a middleware receiving a handshake message which is sent by a server to a client; the middleware judging whether the version of a communication protocol adopted by the server is higher than the version of a communication protocol adopted by the middleware; if the version of the communication protocol adopted by the server is higher than the version of the communication protocol adopted by the middleware, then the middleware adjusting version information of the communication protocol adopted by the server in the handshake message so that the version of the communication protocol adopted by the server is identical with the version of the communication protocol adopted by the middleware; and the middleware sending the handshake message to the client so that the server is enabled to communicate with the client through adoption of the communication protocol of an adjusted version. The method and device for the compatible protocol solve a problem that parsing codes of the communication protocol of the middleware always change with the change of the communication protocol and realize that the middleware is compatible with the client and the server-side, which adopt a communication protocol of a new version, at an extremely low cost.
