Abstract

The present invention provides an ink-based digital printing system comprising an external fluid applicator for applying a multi-component multifunctional ink reservoir solution to the surface of an imaging plate. Image-by-image exposure of the plate using a high power laser to remove a first component of the reservoir solution from selected areas of the plate in accordance with the digital image data, thereby leaving a second component at the selected areas layer. The plate is then inked with printing-ready inks. Ink adheres to the selected areas from which the first component has been removed to form an ink image. The ink image is transferred in an image transfer step, wherein the second component enables efficient transfer of the ink to the media with reduced image quality defects.
