Embodiment Construction

[0021] Referring to the drawings, in which like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views, a kit of vibration welding apparatus 10 is shown in figure 1 is schematically shown in . The vibration welding device 10 can be used, for example, to form welds during the manufacture of workpieces, figure 2 The exemplary workpiece 130 shown is in the form of a portion of a multi-cell battery pack. Although other types of workpieces can be ultrasonically welded without departing from the scope of the present invention, figure 2 The exemplary workpiece for is a typical class of welded systems where high quality / durable welds must be formed in a repeatable process.

[0022] Host device 40 is in communication with vibration welding apparatus 10 and with sensor 25 positioned relative to vibration welding apparatus 10 . Each sensor 25 has a different function, hereinafter referred to image 3 An exemplary set of sensors 25B-K is described in detail. The host device 40...

Abstract

A vibration welding system includes vibration welding equipment having a welding horn and anvil, a host device, a check station, and a robot. The robot moves the horn and anvil via an arm to the check station. Sensors, e.g., temperature sensors, are positioned with respect to the welding equipment. Additional sensors are positioned with respect to the check station, including a pressure-sensitive array. The host device, which monitors a condition of the welding equipment, measures signals via the sensors positioned with respect to the welding equipment when the horn is actively forming a weld. The robot moves the horn and anvil to the check station, activates the check station sensors at the check station, and determines a condition of the welding equipment by processing the received signals. Acoustic, force, temperature, displacement, amplitude, and / or attitude / gyroscopic sensors may be used.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to automatic monitoring of vibration welding equipment. Background technique [0002] Vibration welding is the technique of applying vibrational energy to a clamped workpiece within a specific frequency range. The frequency range is usually the ultrasonic range. Surface friction between adjacent vibrating surfaces clamping the workpiece generates heat, which ultimately softens and bonds the adjacent surfaces of the workpiece. Vibration welding with properly functioning welding equipment and a well-controlled process generally produces welds with very consistent welds and results in repeatable weld quality. However, although various methods exist to ensure control of the vibration welding process, such methods are not optimal for the on-going monitoring or for maintenance status or other status conditions of the vibration welding equipment. Contents of the invention [0003] Disclosed herein is a vibration welding system and m...
