Problems solved by technology

However, due to the much smaller size of the mobile device (relative to the aircraft), the multi-antenna approach may not be possible because the length of the GPS signal phase is longer than that of the mobile device
Additionally, mobile devices require highly accurate location information to be optimally useful, and power is limited as most mobile devices draw their power from batteries
Also, the movement pattern of a mobile device may not be as "smooth" as an airplane

Embodiment Construction

[0021] What is needed are systems and methods for providing more accurate location detection in areas where GPS may be obscured, such as in or near buildings. A more important goal is to reduce power consumption while maintaining accurate position detection. To achieve these goals, this embodiment describes the GMHLD (GPS / MEM Hybrid Location Detection) architecture.

[0022] In the following detailed description of the embodiments, references to "one embodiment," "an embodiment," "example embodiment," etc. indicate that the embodiment may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but that each embodiment does not necessarily The specific feature, structure or characteristic must be included. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Furthermore, when a specific feature, structure or characteristic is described in conjunction with an embodiment, it is considered that it is within the knowledge of those skilled in the art to...

Abstract

The present application describes a computer-implemented method and system for obtaining position information for a moving mobile device with increased accuracy ars.d reduced power consumption. The subject of the present application combines information from a GPS location sensor with information from MEMS devices such as an acceleration detector and a gyroscope using statistical analysis techniques such as a Kalman filter to estimate the location of the device with greater accuracy while using numerical, methods such as the Newton-Raphson Method to minimize power consumption. Minimizing power consumption is possible because GPS signals sampled at a lower rate can conserve power, while GPS sampled at a lower rate and working together with MEMS devices can achieve the same level of location prediction accuracy as a GPS alone sampled at a higher rate.

Description

technical field [0001] The field relates to real-time position detection systems that use MEMS and GPS sensors to achieve high position prediction accuracy while conserving power. Background technique [0002] Real-time location detection allows for many location-based applications, such as store finding, transportation routing, and advertising targeting. In outdoor environments, GPS and cell tower signals are typically used to detect the location of the mobile device. However, cell tower signals may not provide highly accurate or precise information about location, and GPS signals may not be available when satellite signals are obstructed, such as when the mobile device is in or near a building. Additionally, receiving and processing GPS signals can consume a significant amount of energy, thus reducing battery life. [0003] In addition to GPS sensors, some mobile devices are equipped with MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) sensors. MEMS sensors are typically very s...
