Methods and apparatus for determining work performed by an individual from measured physiological parameters

Methods and apparatus for gathering and processing data sensed on an individual from portable heart monitors and accelerometers aligned along three orthogonal axes determine substantially equivalent oxygen consumption information during an individual's physical activities without requiring gas-flow or gas-analysis equipment. Such information promotes calculations of physiological energy expenditures, and analyses of the accelerometer data associated with a specific sensing location on an individual's body provide indication of the particular physical activity for selecting appropriate scaling factors and filtering requirements in analyzing the data to determine various parameters indicative of the individual's expenditure of physiological energy, and other health-oriented factors.

System and Method of Biomechanical Posture Detection and Feedback Including Sensor Normalization

A system and method are described herein for a sensor device which biomechanically detects in real-time a user's movement state and posture and then provides real-time feedback to the user based on the user's real-time posture. The feedback is provided through immediate sensory feedback through the sensor device (e.g., a sound or vibration) as well as through an avatar within an associated application with which the sensor device communicates. The sensor device detects the user's movement state and posture by capturing data from a tri-axial accelerometer in the sensor device. Streamed data from the accelerometer is normalized to correct for sensor errors as well as variations in sensor placement and orientation. Normalization is based on accelerometer data collected while the user is wearing the device and performing specific actions.

Inertial/magnetic measurement device

Disclosed is a system and method for onboard optimal estimation of heading, pitch, and roll through real-time measurement of magnetic field, acceleration and angular motion in three dimensions. Magnetometer information is used to create an initial reference from which movement is measured. Thus, the process does not have to start when the body is in a known position. Further, the device does not have to continually rely on accelerometer data to get roll and pitch. To do this magnetic field data is used to complement gyro information. The magnetic data is used to estimate pitch, roll, and heading.

Apparatus and methodology for calibration of a gyroscope and a compass included in a handheld device

Novel techniques for estimating compass and gyroscope biases for handheld devices are disclosed. The handheld devices can include wireless phones, navigational devices and video gaming systems. The compass bias can be determined by causing a small movement of the handheld device and comparing the data obtained from the compass with the data obtained from the gyroscope. The gyroscope bias can be determined by obtaining a quaternion based angular velocity term of the handheld device when the accelerometer and compass data are reliable, and then comparing the angular velocity term to with the gyro data estimate the gyro bias. When the compass and / or the accelerometer data are unreliable, a previously determined quaternion angular velocity term is used, which was determined when the compass and the accelerometer were providing reliable data. The gyroscope bias can also be determined by measuring gyroscope biases at various temperatures in a non-factory setting, and storing that data in a memory, and using the data to estimate gyro biases when the accelerometer and / or the compass data are unreliable.

Method and apparatus for data fusion of a three-axis magnetometer and three axis accelerometer

Method and apparatus of integrating a three-axis magnetometer and a three-axis accelerometer to provide attitude and heading, calibrated magnetometer and accelerometer data, and angular rate, while removing sensor error sources over time and temperature and to compensate for hard and soft iron distortions of the Earth magnetic field. Filtered accelerometer data are corrected to account for various error sources. The magnetic heading is calculated from a horizontal magnetic field vector transformed from three dimensional Earth's magnetic field vector by using quasi-static roll and pitch angles from the filtered accelerometer data. A first Kalman filter estimates the state vector, based on the principle that the magnitude of local Earth's magnetic field vector is constant, to form hard and soft iron correction matrices. A second Kalman filter estimates a correction matrix of coupled remaining soft iron and the misalignment of the magnetometer and the accelerometer, as the dot product of local Earth's magnetic field vector and a corrected gravitational acceleration vector, at a quasi-static position, is constant. The three dimensional Earth's magnetic field vector is received by removing the hard and soft irons through the soft iron and hard iron correction matrixes.
