In normal operation, the pre-delivery pump delivers fuel from an input line 18 connected to the vehicle's fuel tank (eg via a filter) and compresses the fuel to operating pressure, which is supplied to the fuel filter 16 via line 20 . The pre-compressed fuel is supplied via a line 22 to a high pressure pump 12 which compresses said fuel to over 1000 bar and is supplied via a further line 24 to the common rail system of the vehicle.

The pre-delivery pump (14) can be regulated, said pre-delivery pump (14) being regulated on the basis of a first fuel pressure upstream of the filter (16) and a second fuel pressure downstream of the filter (16).
