Problems solved by technology

[0005] Deploying specialized appliances or traditional hardware blades in existing routing infrastructure can be expensive or time-consuming, preventing service providers from quickly deploying hardware to support new services
Deploying specialized appliances adds operational costs, as existing technologies often require many different custom devices to be interconnected and configured in a static fashion, and offer little integration with routers or other network elements

Embodiment Construction

[0020] figure 1 An example network system is shown in accordance with the techniques described herein. figure 1 An example network system includes a service provider network 2 that operates as a private network to provide packet-based network services to user devices 16A-16N (collectively "user devices 16"). That is, the service provider network 2 provides authentication and establishment of network access for the user equipment 16 so that the user equipment can begin exchanging data packets using the public network 12, which can be an internal or external packet-based network , such as the Internet.

[0021] exist figure 1 In the example of , service provider network 2 includes access network 6 (“access network 6 ”), which provides a link to public network 12 via service provider core network 7 and gateway 8 . The service provider core network 7 and the public network 12 provide packet-based services, which are available on request or used by user equipment 16 . As exampl...

Abstract

Techniques for providing session-aware stateful network services to user packet flows are described. Devices in the service provider network direct user packets along the service chain. Each tunnel is established to direct traffic according to the ordered set of specific network services for the corresponding service chain. An ingress device for a tunnel encapsulates user packets and embeds opaque session cookies, each session cookie uniquely identifying a set of packet streams for a user session among other packet streams tunneled by a given its service. Each service node only needs to identify the service tunnel and the session cookie embedded within the tunnel packet over which the tunnel packet is received, no need for further inspection of the encapsulated user packet and additional indexing or additional recovery forcing network nodes to be programmed to deliver status or statistics required by web services.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to computer networks and, more particularly, to applying network services to user data traffic traversing computer networks. Background technique [0002] A computer network is a collection of interconnected computing devices capable of exchanging data and sharing resources. In a packet-based network, computing devices communicate data by dividing the data into small chunks called packets, which are individually routed through the network from a source device to a destination device. The destination device extracts the data from the packets and assembles the data into its original form. Dividing the data into packets enables the source device to resend only those individual packets that may have been lost during transmission. [0003] Referring to eg routers, certain devices maintain routing information that describes routes through the network. A route may generally be defined as a path between two locations of a netw...
