AI Technical Summary

Problems solved by technology

Depending on the equipment needed to test and / or repair, the maintainer may make several trips to the fault site
Additionally, the maintainer may need to call in one or more additional maintainers, or if the fault is of a type the maintainer is not suited to address, the maintainer may need to call in a different maintainer to make the repair
The time required under conventional systems to dispatch maintainers, identify the fault, and carry out repairs can result in lengthy and / or costly delays, traffic jams, or the like, for example when a fault occurs in a signaling area

Embodiment Construction

[0057] Embodiments of the inventive subject matter relate to methods and systems for examining routes along which vehicle systems are traveling in order to identify potential route segments that are damaged or destroyed. In an embodiment, the vehicle system may be checked by injecting electrical signals into the route from a first vehicle in the vehicle system while the vehicle system is traveling along the route and monitoring the route at another second vehicle (which is also in the vehicle system) route. Detection of a signal at the second vehicle and / or detection of a signal change at the second vehicle may indicate a potentially damaged (eg, damaged or partially damaged) segment of the route between the first and second vehicles. In an embodiment, the route may be a track of a rail vehicle system and the first and second vehicles may be used to identify damaged or partially damaged segments of one or more rails of the track. Electrical signals injected into the route may...

Abstract

The present invention is entitled "Route Inspection System and Method". The system includes first and second application devices, a control unit and at least one processor. The first and second application devices are configured to at least one of: be conductively or inductively coupled to one of the conductive tracks. The control unit is configured to control the first and second application means to electrically inject the first inspection signal into the conductive track via the first application means and to inject the second inspection signal into the conductive track via the second application means. at least one processor configured to monitor one or more electrical characteristics of the first and second conductive tracks in response to injecting the first and second inspection signals into the conductive tracks; and based on one or more of the first and second conductive tracks The electrical characteristics identify the type of fault.
