Embodiment Construction

[0016] It should be understood at the outset that, although an illustrative implementation of one or more embodiments is provided below, the disclosed systems and / or methods may be implemented using any number of techniques, whether currently known or in existence. The invention should in no way be limited to the illustrative implementations, drawings, and techniques illustrated below, including the exemplary designs and implementations illustrated and described herein, but rather be within the scope of the appended claims and their equivalents Modified within the full range of .

[0017] PON is a shared medium where a single fiber at the service provider central office can be passively split into multiple end-user connections. The term passive may refer to a non-powered (eg, no external power supply) optical splitter used to effect branching of optical signals. A PON may include an OLT located at a central office and connected to a plurality of ONUs located at end user locat...

Abstract

The present invention discloses an OLT, including: a processor for calculating a downlink bandwidth map indicating an active time period in which the OLT is scheduled to transmit data frames to an ONU and generating a message including the downlink bandwidth map; and a processor coupled to The processor and a transmitter for sending the message to the ONU via the PON, wherein the message instructs the ONU to power down at least one ONU receive data processing unit outside of the active period. Also disclosed is a computer program product comprising computer-executable instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable medium such that when executed by a processor, the computer-executable instructions cause an ONU to perform the following operations: receive an message, and powering down the ONU receiving data processing unit outside the active period, wherein the active period indicates a scheduled period during which data transmitted through the PON is related to the ONU.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to communication networks and, in particular embodiments, to downlink burst transmission in passive optical networks. Background technique [0002] A Passive Optical Network (PON) is a system for providing "last mile" network access. A PON can be a point-to-multipoint (P2MP) network in which passive splitters are positioned in an optical distribution network (ODN) to enable a single feed fiber from a central office to serve multiple customer premises. PON can use different wavelengths for upstream and downstream transmission. Some examples of PON technologies available in the industry may include: Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Bit capacity PON (GPON). EPON, as specified in IEEE documents 802.3ah and 802.3av, can utilize Ethernet protocol technology to support P2MP connections utilizing native Ethernet frame transport, both of which are inc...
