Abstract

The present invention provides an integrated powertrain and chassis design that maximizes vehicle passenger compartment volume. A vehicle includes a vehicle structure extending along a longitudinal axis. The engine includes a crankshaft defining a crankshaft axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis. A transmission includes an output shaft defining a transmission output axis substantially parallel to the crankshaft axis. The transmission output axis is positioned closer to the front of the vehicle structure than the crankshaft axis. The crankshaft axis is disposed vertically a distance of approximately 140 mm above the transmission output axis. The engine includes at least one cylinder bore defining a bore axis disposed perpendicular to and possibly intersecting the crankshaft axis. The bore axis may be angled towards the front end of the vehicle structure to define an angle between the bore axis and a vertical plane. The angle between the bore axis and the vertical plane may be about 18°.
