Embodiment Construction

[0013] Embodiments will be described below with reference to the drawings.

[0014] figure 1 It is a block diagram showing a typical configuration of the magnetic disk device of the embodiment. The magnetic disk device is also called a hard disk drive (HDD). Therefore, in the following description, the magnetic disk device is referred to as HDD. figure 1 The shown HDD includes a magnetic disk (disc) 11 , a magnetic head (head) 12 , a spindle motor (SPM) 13 , an actuator 14 , a driver IC 15 , a magnetic head IC 16 , a temperature sensor 17 and a controller 18 .

[0015] The magnetic disk 11 is, for example, a magnetic recording medium having a recording surface for magnetically recording data on one side thereof. The magnetic disk 11 is rotated at high speed by the SPM 13 . The SPM 13 is driven by a drive current (or a drive voltage) supplied from the driver IC 15 .

[0016] The magnetic disk 11 (more specifically, the recording surface of the magnetic disk 11 ) includes, ...

Abstract

According to one embodiment, a controller of a magnetic disk device starts to receive first data specified in a first write command from a host, and starts to write the first data to a disk in accordance with the first write command. The controller reports a status for execution of the first write command to the host depending on whether or not a second capacity of data not yet written to the disk is less than or equal to a first capacity of a first free space in a nonvolatile cache. The first free space is available to save data during a first period when a backup power supply enables power to be supplied. The second capacity decreases as writing of the first data to the disk progresses.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present invention relate to a magnetic disk device and a method of executing a write command. Background technique [0002] Generally, in a magnetic disk device, in accordance with a write command from a host device, data having a data length specified by the write command (that is, write data) is written to the magnetic disk. However, the power supply (more specifically, the main power supply) of the magnetic disk device may be cut off before writing data to the magnetic disk is completed. In this case, part of written data (more specifically, data not written to the disk) may be lost. [0003] Therefore, magnetic disk devices in recent years have a power failure protection (PLP) function that ensures written data even when the power supply is cut off. The PLP function is a function of high-speed saving of data not written to the disk in the nonvolatile cache memory when the power is turned off. This saving work is performed by r...
