The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle when changing lanes on a one-way roadway (22) comprising at least three lanes (20, 24, 26), said method comprising the steps: detecting, by means of a monitoring system (12) of the motor vehicle (10), an impending lane change of the motor vehicle (10) from a first lane (20) to an adjacent second lane (26); detecting an impending lane change of another vehicle (18) to the second lane (26) from a third lane (24) adjacent to the second lane (26); determining, by means of the monitoring system (12), whether a performance of the lane change by the motor vehicle (10) runs the risk of a collision with the other vehicle (18); and outputting a warning signal by means of a warning device (14) and/or influencing the transverse guidance of the motor vehicle (10) by means of a driver assistance system (16) of the motor vehicle (10) as soon as the risk of a collision is detected.
