Embodiment Construction

[0064] In general, an OLED comprises at least one organic layer disposed between and electrically connected to an anode and a cathode. When a current is applied, the anode injects holes and the cathode injects electrons into the organic layer. The injected holes and electrons each migrate toward oppositely charged electrodes. When electrons and holes are localized on the same molecule, "excitons," which are localized electron-hole pairs with excited energy states, are formed. Light is emitted when the excitons relax via the photoemission mechanism. In some cases, excitons can be localized on excitons or exciplexes. Non-radiative mechanisms such as thermal relaxation can also occur but are generally considered undesirable.

[0065] The original OLEDs used emissive molecules that emitted light from a single state ("fluorescence"), as disclosed, for example, in US Patent No. 4,769,292, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety. Fluorescent emission typically occurs o...

Abstract

Novel compounds and uses in devices are disclosed. The invention discloses a novel multicomponent system or a single compound that is capable of performing triplet-triplet annihilation up conversion process (TTA-UC). A solution or solid film that comprises the TTA-UC system or the compound is provided. The system or the compound can be used in an optical or optoelectronic device.
