Embodiment Construction

[0031] The detailed description set forth below in conjunction with the accompanying drawings is intended as a description of exemplary embodiments of the invention and is not intended to represent the only embodiments in which the invention may be practiced. The term "exemplary" is used throughout this description to mean "serving as an example, instance, or illustration" and should not necessarily be construed as preferred or advantageous over other exemplary embodiments. The detailed description contains specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of the exemplary embodiments. In some instances, some devices are shown in block diagram form.

[0032] Transferring power wirelessly may refer to transferring any form of energy associated with an electric, magnetic, electromagnetic, or other field from a transmitter to a receiver without the use of physical electrical conductors (eg, power may be transferred via free space). The power output in a wire...

Abstract

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for detecting foreign objects. An apparatus for detecting a presence of an object is provided including a plurality of electrically conductive loops (701, 702, 703, 704) arranged in an array. The apparatus includes a sensor circuit (730) configured to determine a characteristic associated with each of the plurality of loops. The apparatus includes a hardware processor (734) configured to, for each loop of the plurality of loops, determine a parameter based on the characteristic associated with the loop and the characteristic associated with at least one adjacent loop. The hardware processor may be further configured to determine the presence of the object based on the parameter. The parameter may comprise a sum of a difference between the characteristic associated with the loop and a reference value for the characteristic, and a difference between the characteristic associated with each of the at least one adjacent loop and the reference value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to wireless power transfer, and more specifically, to devices, systems, and methods for increased sensitivity of foreign object detection loop arrays. Background technique [0002] Remote systems, such as vehicles, that incorporate electrically derived motion power received from an energy storage device, such as a battery, have been introduced. For example, hybrid electric vehicles include an on-board charger that charges the vehicle using power from the vehicle's brakes and a conventional motor. It is often proposed to charge battery electric vehicles (EVs) by some type of wired alternating current (AC), such as a household or commercial AC supply. A wired charging connection requires a cable or other similar connector that physically connects to the power supply. Cables and similar connectors can sometimes be inconvenient or bulky, among other disadvantages. Wireless charging systems capable of transferring...
