Problems solved by technology

However, even with multiple lasers, range and velocity estimates can still be distorted by, for example, multipath effects or other interference
Also, because laser components are complex and expensive, using multiple lasers in a LIDAR system can be expensive and relatively difficult to maintain

Embodiment Construction

[0011] This paper describes a single laser frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system with improved processing for range and velocity estimation. These LIDAR systems and methods described herein can alleviate problems in distance and velocity estimation arising from, for example, multipath effects of target beam propagation.

[0012] The FMCW LIDAR using a laser diode can sweep the emitted optical signal in the optical frequency by modulating the driving current of the laser. In general, the optical power output by a laser will vary significantly during a frequency sweep as a result of drive current modulation.

[0013] In an idealized FMCW application, the laser frequency is swept linearly in time and the laser output power is constant. A return signal from the target is mixed with a portion of the transmitted signal to obtain a constant frequency beat signal. The beat frequency will be the sum of the signal frequency changes over ...

Abstract

In one general aspect, a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium stores instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processors to perform processes. The process may include: generating emitted electromagnetic radiation based on the frequency pattern (410); and receiving reflected electromagnetic radiation reflected from an object (420). The process may include defining combined frequency data based on the frequency of the emitted electromagnetic radiation and the frequency of the reflected electromagnetic radiation (430). The process may also include defining a set of spectral bins based on a Fourier transform in the frequency domain based on the combined frequency data (440), and may include identifying a subset of the set of spectral bins (450). The system on which the process operates can be a single laser FMCW lidar, and the system can alleviate problems in range and velocity estimation arising from, for example, multipath / speckle effects of target beam propagation.
