[0030] This specification relates to a two-stroke cycle, double crankshaft, opposed-piston engine having a cylinder block with a plurality of cylinders arranged in a row such that a single plane contains the longitudinal axes of all engine cylinders. The row-by-row alignment of the cylinders is referred to as an "in-line" configuration in accordance with standard terminology in the engine field. Furthermore, an in-line arrangement may be "straight", wherein the plane containing the longitudinal axis is substantially vertical, or "slanted", wherein the plane containing the longitudinal axis is inclined. Thus, while the following description is limited to in-line configurations, it applies to straight and angled variants as well. It is also possible to position the engine so that the plane containing the longitudinal axis is disposed substantially horizontally, in which case the in-line arrangement would be "horizontal".

Abstract

Opposed-piston engines have a cylinder block having a plurality of cylinders arranged in-line, wherein each cylinder includes an intake port longitudinally separated from an exhaust port. The engines air handling system includes open intake and exhaust plenums in the cylinder block. The open chamber configuration eliminates the need for multi-pipe manifolds and smoothes the flow of charge air.
