Abstract

A system and method for monitoring a state of charge of a battery is provided. A battery monitor has a processor and memory configured to monitor an operating voltage and a load voltage of a battery. The electric power steering system is configured to supply electric power from the battery. The battery monitor is configured to calculate a voltage drop between the operating voltage and the load voltage when the battery is under load from the electric power steering system. The battery monitor compares the voltage drop with a predetermined voltage drop and determines that the battery is in a low state of charge when the voltage drop is greater than or equal to the predetermined voltage drop. When the battery is in a low state of charge, the battery monitor indicates that the power steering system is operating in a limited state.
