Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for continuously estimating blood pressure using noninvasive techniques. The method involves sensing displacement signals generated by palpating radial arteries. The radial artery was modeled as a cylindrical Voigt-type viscoelastic tissue in order to estimate individualized blood pressure. This model includes a displacement signal and a set of parameters as input. This set of parameters includes the mean radius of the artery, the radius at zero mmHg, the viscoelastic damping parameter, the elasticity of the artery, and the wall thickness of the artery. This method involves using heuristic optimization techniques to optimize this set of parameters, which helps in estimating systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The method and apparatus can also be personalized to monitor and estimate a person's blood pressure alone.
