Problems solved by technology

Unfortunately, in some cockpits there is not enough space or a suitable location to mount the PED for viewing and interaction
Also, it is sometimes difficult to position a tablet computer next to the cockpit multifunction display for shared viewing or convenient viewing, which results in more difficult crew coordination, reducing the overall usability of PED-based EFB information

Embodiment approach

[0052] Clause 1. A method of accessing a portable electronic device (PED) onboard an aircraft, the method comprising the steps of:

[0053] Provides on-board networking to cockpit-mounted multi-function displays;

[0054] coupling the PED to the onboard network;

[0055] receiving information from a PED hosted application in said PED;

[0056] routing the information through a gateway; and

[0057] The information is displayed on the cockpit mounted multifunction display.

[0058] Clause 2. The method according to Clause 1, further comprising the steps of:

[0059] coupling a pilot control interface to the PED via the onboard network; and

[0060] A number of functions on the PED are controlled via the pilot control interface.

[0061] Clause 3. The method of clause 2, wherein the step of coupling the pilot control interface to the PED comprises the step of: coupling a plurality of inputs and controls to the PED, wherein the plurality of inputs and controls include:

Abstract

The present application relates to methods and systems for integrating portable devices with cockpit displays. The method comprises the steps of providing an onboard network coupled to a cockpit mounted multifunction display, and coupling said integrated portable device PED to said onboard network. The method may further comprise the steps of receiving information from a PED-hosted application in the PED, routing information through a gateway and / or a plurality of firewalls, and displaying the information on the cockpit mounted multifunction display. In some embodiments, a pilot control interface is coupled to the PED through an onboard network and controls a plurality of functions on the PED via the pilot control interface. In some embodiments, an aircraft includes a fuselage section, a wing section, and a system capable of performing the method using a computer-readable storage medium having stored instructions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to airplanes and, more particularly, to the use of multifunction displays in the cockpit to distribute various information to the flight crew of the airplane. Background technique [0002] Modern commercial aircraft include many avionics display systems and electronic control systems. The use of such systems is regulated and approved by regulatory authorities around the world. Such systems are classified by these regulatory bodies according to the level of danger presented to the aircraft in flight in the event of a system failure. As an example, a system may be certified as a "Class A" certified system if its failure would be very serious or catastrophic. A system may be classified as a "Class D" certified system if its failure presents a minor hazard that can be reasonably handled by a suitably trained and alert aircrew. B-level certification systems and C-level certification systems fall between these two extremes. ...
