Problems solved by technology

Attempts to suppress noise due to irrigation pumps have involved modifications to the pump configuration, but these techniques have not been fully effective, especially at higher irrigation flow rates that may be required to supply catheters with multiple ablation electrodes
Other attempts to reduce ECG noise employ additional cables or wires to ground the irrigation fluid, such as the attempt described in US Patent Publication 2014 / 0378805, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety, which adds Complexity of the system and need to be managed by an electrophysiologist

Abstract

The present invention is entitled "Catheter with Shunt Electrode". The present invention provides a catheter having an electrode assembly having a functional electrode positioned at a first location on the electrode assembly and a shunt electrode positioned proximate to the first location. An irrigation fluid carried by the catheter can be electrically coupled to the patient's blood through the shunt electrode. The shunt electrode may be used to reduce noise in the electrocardiogram signal caused by the pump used to supply the irrigation fluid.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to various electrophysiological (EP) catheters for mapping and / or ablation in the heart, and more particularly to catheters with shunt electrodes to reduce noise in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Background technique [0002] Medical catheterization is routinely performed today. For example, in the case of cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation that occur when areas of heart tissue conduct electrical signals abnormally. Procedures for treating cardiac arrhythmias include surgically disrupting the source of the signals causing the arrhythmia, as well as disrupting the conduction pathways for such signals. By selectively ablating heart tissue by applying energy (eg, radiofrequency energy) through a catheter, it is sometimes possible to stop or alter the propagation of adverse electrical signals from one part of the heart to another. This ablation method disrupts unfavorable electrical pathways by creating non-co...
