The invention discloses an image decoding method and an image decoding device. The method comprises the steps: a processor reads GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) file data, analyzes the GIF file dataaccording to a preset GIF image standard rule to obtain image data encoded by use of an LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) encoding algorithm, and sends the image data to a hardware logic circuit; and the hardware logic circuit extracts LZW code words from the received image data, analyzes the image data into final color data according to the LZW code words, and sends the final color data to the processor soas to generate a decoded image. According to the image decoding method and the image decoding device provided by the invention, through the use of parallel characteristics and pipeline structures ofthe hardware circuit, the execution efficiency and the throughput of a GIF decoder can be improved.
