Method and Apparatus for Defending Against Zero-Day Worm-Based Attacks

Honey pots are used to attract computer attacks to a virtual operating system that is a virtual instantiation of a typical deployed operational system. Honey nets are a collection of these virtual systems assembled to create a virtual network. The subject system uses a forward deployed honey net combined with a parallel monitoring system collecting data into and from the honey net, leveraging the controlled environment to identify malicious behavior and new attacks. This honey net/monitoring pair is placed ahead of the real deployed operational network and the data it uncovers is used to reconfigure network protective devices in real time to prevent zero-day based attacks from entering the real network. The forward network protection system analyzes the data gathered by the honey pots and generates signatures and new rules for protection that are coupled to both advanced perimeter network security devices and to the real network itself so that these devices can be reconfigured with threat data and new rules to prevent infected packets from entering the real network and from propagating to other machines. Note the subject system applies to both zero-day exploit-based worms and also manual attacks conducted by an individual who is leveraging novel attack methods.

Systems and methods for immersive interaction with actual and/or simulated facilities for process, environmental and industrial control

The invention provides, in some aspects, systems for interaction with a control environment that includes controlled equipment along with control devices that monitor and control that controlled equipment. According to some of those aspects, such a system includes first functionality that generates output representing an operational status of the controlled equipment, as well as second functionality that generates output representing an operational of one or more of the control devices. An engine coordinates the first functionality and to the second functionality to generate an operational status of the control environment. A virtual reality environment generates, as a function of that operational status and one or more physical aspects of the control environment, a three-dimensional (“3D”) display of the control environment. The virtual reality environment is responsive to user interaction with one or more input devices to generate the 3D display so as to permit the user to interact with at least one of the control devices and the controlled equipment at least as represented by the 3D display of the control environment. The engine applies to at least one of the first and second functionality indicia of those interactions to discern resulting changes in the operational status of the control environment. It applies indicia of those changes to the virtual reality environment to effect corresponding variation in the 3D display of the control environment—i.e., variation indicative of the resulting change in the control environment.

Graphics integration into a process configuration and control environment

Graphic elements and graphic displays are provided for use in a process environment to display information to one or more users about the process environment, such as the current state of device within a process plant. The graphic elements and display may be associated with various logical and physical elements within the process plant during configuration of the process plant, and may be configured and downloaded to the hardware within the process plant along with other configuration items, such as control routines. In particular, the graphic elements and graphic displays may be created and stored in a library, and may then be configured by being associated with various logical or physical entities within the plant. During the configuration process, the graphic elements and graphic displays may be associated with areas, equipment, process modules, control routines or control strategies of the plant as defined elsewhere in the plant configuration, or may be associated with interfaces or display devices, to define the hardware on which the graphic displays will execute during runtime, as well as to define the process entities to which these displays will be bound for display purposes. Still further, each of the graphic displays may be defined with a role or a functional use, such as an operator view, a maintenance view, etc., and these roles may be used to defined the proper access and use of the graphic displays within the runtime environment.
